Our Mission

Accountability. Transparency. Physician Rights.

The Medical Board Accountability Project is an independent research and advocacy organization dedicated to documenting patterns of investigator misconduct, publishing accountability data, and connecting wrongly accused physicians with qualified legal defense.

Why We Exist

California's Medical Board investigates thousands of complaints each year. The vast majority are filed by patients, competitors, or disgruntled employees — and a significant percentage are closed without cause after months or years of investigation that nonetheless damage careers, reputations, and physician well-being.

The Board's investigative process is largely opaque. Investigators operate with broad discretion, minimal oversight, and no meaningful accountability when they conduct investigations improperly. Physicians — who are presumed guilty by the public the moment a complaint is filed — have few resources to understand the process, document misconduct, or find experienced defense counsel.

We built this platform to change that. By aggregating public records, tracking investigator conduct over time, and building a network of vetted defense attorneys, we give physicians the information and connections they need to defend themselves effectively.

Our Principles

Independence

We accept no funding from the Medical Board, state agencies, or any party with a financial interest in the outcome of Medical Board proceedings. Our data and analysis are our own.

Accuracy

Every record in our database is sourced from public documents. We do not publish allegations — only documented outcomes. When records are corrected or updated, we update them.

Physician Rights

We believe physicians accused of misconduct deserve the same presumption of innocence and procedural fairness as any other person facing government action. We advocate for due process, not impunity.

Transparency

We publish our methodology, data sources, and limitations openly. We are not a law firm, a lobbying organization, or a political advocacy group. We are a research and referral platform.

We are not a law firm

The Medical Board Accountability Project is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Nothing on this website creates an attorney-client relationship. Attorney referrals are made as a courtesy; we do not guarantee outcomes and are not responsible for the conduct of referred attorneys.

Data sourcing and limitations

Investigator records are compiled from public records requests, Board meeting minutes, administrative hearing transcripts, and court filings. Data reflects information available as of the date of last update. We make reasonable efforts to ensure accuracy but cannot guarantee completeness. Investigators or their representatives may contact us to correct factual errors.

No affiliation with the Medical Board

MBAP is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or funded by the Medical Board of California, the California Department of Consumer Affairs, or any state or federal agency. We are an independent nonprofit research organization.

Attorney network vetting

Attorneys in our referral network have been reviewed for California State Bar standing, relevant experience in medical license defense, and professional reputation. Inclusion in the network does not constitute an endorsement of any attorney's services, and we receive no compensation for referrals.
